
Cytoprotective signalling of BPC-157 in connective and gut tissue repair
BPC-157, a stable peptide derived from a sequence in gastric juice, has been studied in preclinical models for its role in cytoprotection and tissue repair.
Overview
BPC-157 (body protection compound) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide derived from a sequence in human gastric juice, studied as a cytoprotective and pro-healing agent. The published science is largely preclinical (animal and in-vitro), and evidence in humans remains limited. Studies report that BPC-157 modulates angiogenesis in injured tissue: in rodent models of muscle and tendon injury, research suggests it upregulates vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and promotes capillary ingrowth, contributing to more organized repair.
In-vitro work reports that BPC-157 increases growth hormone receptor expression in tendon fibroblasts in a dose- and time-dependent manner, a pathway associated with fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis. A substantial body of work links its effects to the nitric oxide (NO) system, where reviews describe it engaging eNOS signalling and counteracting the effects of NOS blockers. In rodent gastrointestinal models, studies report accelerated healing of intestinal anastomoses, cytoprotection of gastric mucosa, and attenuation of experimental inflammation. High-quality human clinical evidence is not established.
